Definition of pornography
In interdisciplinary investigations into the relationships between pornography and its audiences, the issue of how to define the object of study is more complex than in studies situated within a single discipline. A Delphi panel of 38 leading pornography researchers from a wide range of disciplines was asked about various topics, including the definition of pornography. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of two rounds of survey responses suggested two different and—at first sight—incompatible definitions operating. This technical report suggests that we should encourage researchers to choose which definition they want to use in a self-reflective way depending on the needs of the project, so long as they make it explicit and justify their decision. In this technical report, we focus on definitions of pornography, paying particular attention to the question of whether it is possible to reach consensus on a definition across disciplines. The rise of smartphones, allowing easy private access to sexually explicit material, especially for young people, has made these issues particularly pressing for many researchers.

Pornography and Censorship

Pornography and Censorship (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Pornography often shortened to porn is the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the exclusive purpose of sexual arousal. The term does not include live exhibitions like sex shows and striptease. The primary subjects of present-day pornographic depictions are pornographic models , who pose for still photographs, and pornographic actors who engage in filmed sex acts. Various groups within society have considered depictions of a sexual nature immoral , addictive , and noxious, labeling them pornographic, and attempting to have them suppressed under obscenity laws, censored or made illegal. Such grounds, and even the definition of pornography, have differed in various historical, cultural, and national contexts.

Pornography
Can a government legitimately prohibit citizens from publishing or viewing pornography, or would this be an unjustified violation of basic freedoms? This question lies at the heart of a debate that raises fundamental issues about just when, and on what grounds, the state is justified in using its coercive powers to limit the freedom of individuals. Traditionally, liberals defended the freedom of consenting adults to publish and consume pornography in private from moral and religious conservatives who wanted pornography banned for its obscenity, its corrupting impact on consumers and its corrosive effect on traditional family and religious values. But, in more recent times, the pornography debate has taken on a somewhat new and surprising shape.

I know it when I see it. Pornography has taken on an additional, non-sexualized, sense: one that refers to a depiction of sensational material such as violence in order to elicit a reaction. Examples of pornography in a Sentence If you ask me, his movies are just high-class pornography.
